SIT-A-LONG with JUNDO: Retreat!

Since announcing a couple of days ago Treeleaf Sangha's first "All Online Jukai" ...

TREELEAF JUKAI

... I have received several questions about how we will do the 2 or 3 day "online silent retreat" toward the end, just prior to the Jukai ceremony itself.

So, let me talk about that ...

We have done half-day "retreat-a-longs" in the past, which folks can sit with at any time, "on demand" (and featuring Oryoki, Samu, Chanting, Kinhin and lots & lots of Zazen) ... Please have a look at one HERE and maybe "sit-a-long" ...

SIT-A-LONG with JUNDO: Heart Sutra VIII

If "suffering", from a Buddhist perspective, is your "self" bumping into all the other "selfs" of the world, and your "self" not being "at ease" with the way the world is ... then Buddhist teachings on "no self" and on "emptiness" provide 3 medicines for that "dis-ease" ...

First, there is no "self" to do the bumping, and no other "selfs" to be bumped -- an abiding"self" is an illusion, and thus so too is the "self's" problems and discontents.

Second, there is no division between "self" and "not self", and all is "one", so no two things to go bumpedy bump.

Third, each "bumper" and "bumpee" and "bumping" is perfectly whole, self contained and complete unto itself ... just-what-it-is ... so no friction is possible that way too.

Each of those perspectives serves to alleviate the friction and conflict, and each is simultaneously true in its own way.

SIT-A-LONG with JUNDO: Heart Sutra VI

The 5 Conditions (or Skandhas, or Aggregates) create our false sense of a permanent, substantial "self":

Form (Rupa) - The aggregate of form corresponds to what we would call material or physical factors. It includes the material objects that surround us in the world. This also includes our physical bodies and the five physical sense organs and the corresponding physical objects of the sense organs. These are the eyes and visible objects, the ears and sound, the nose and smell, the tongue and taste, and the skin and tangible objects.

Sensation (Vedanā) - sensing an object as either pleasant or unpleasant or neutral via the senses;

Perception, Cognition (Samjñā) - the subjecting of pain/pleasure/neutral perceptions to further conceptualizations whereby cognition of patterns takes place, such as color, shape, motion, etc., which leads to the cognition of objects;

Mental Formations (Samskāra) - all types of mental habits, thoughts, ideas, opinions, compulsions, and decisions triggered by an object. These are also the karmic latencies which predispose us to perceive or react in certain ways;

Consciousness (Vijñāna) - It is "bifurcative" consciousness, because it splits the world into a duality of experiencer (self) and experience (other).

SIT-A-LONG with JUNDO: Pale Blue Dot

In 1990, Carl Sagan persuaded NASA to use the Voyager 1 spacecraft to take a photograph of the planet Earth from a distance of 4 billion miles. The result was simply arresting: a portrait of our home as a tiny, fragile speck of blue adrift in an unimaginably vast sea of space. In a commencement address for the public release of the photograph, astronomer Sagan offered these profound words:

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every 'superstar,' every 'supreme leader,' every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

But if we are but fragile specks
living on a fragile speck in a vast or infinite universe,
what's this whole Zen thingy about being
"one with the universe"?

SIT-A-LONG with JUNDO: Eiheiji

Today, Will and I joined up with Hans to sit at "Eiheiji Betsuin Chokoji" Temple in Tokyo, an active training temple which is a branch of Eiheiji Head Temple. We sat with the open Monday Zazenkai.

Like yesterday, though, we could not bring cameras into the sitting, so there is no recording today. But please know that we three were sitting with all the other Treeleafers the whole time. They chant Fukanzazengi there, and Hans did it in his great baritone.

"Eiheiji Betsuin" is a very good place. One of my favorite parts is its famous, giant 4-story Kannon ... That's a BIG Kannon! Looks ready (except for the compasion, of course) to stomp on Tokyo in a Japanese monster movies!

Please sit-a-long-(in spirit) with-Will, Hans and Jundo.

SIT-A-LONG with JUNDO: Hoji

We had a memorial service in my wife's family this week, and we are sitting Zazen today to recall ... in stillness and silence ... our loved one.

I am not too much for ceremonies myself, but the following is a description of a Japanese memorial service
that I really like (from a Jodo Shinshu [True Pure Land] Buddhist temple) ...

Memorial services for the deceased, or "Hoji", have a long history in Japanese Buddhism. Family and close friends gather at the Temple in memory of the deceased member of the family, and a monk will chant. Following the service, the group will usually eat together. This meal is important in that it renews each member in both mind and body and strengthens the ties that bind the group together. This custom and the memorial services help to emphasize that death is a natural occurrence in life and is not something to be feared. The memorial service is also a wonderful opportunity of reinforcing family ties beyond one's immediate family, which helps to create a sense of continuity and community from generation to generation.

Chuin refers to the first 49 day period of mourning after death. In the past it was often marked with services held every 7 days. In the some sects of Buddhism, the karmic energy of a person is believed to be in a state of flux, moving to a new state of existence every seven days. This state of flux was called the shadowy world of yin. Thus the name Chuin meaning "in the middle of yin." After the 49th day the energy was said to be reborn. This belief was widespread in China and Japan. [Memorial services may be observed also at the 1st year, 3rd year, 7th year, 13th year, even as far as the 50th year].

However, Jodo Shinshu categorically denies the efficacy of such observances but nevertheless observes Chuin in grateful memory of the deceased and as yet another opportunity to listen to the Dharma. The memorial service in Jodo Shinshu is not for the sake of the dead. In holding the service in memory of the deceased, we acknowledge our ties to the various causes and conditions in our life, that allow us to exist.

You can see a very short video of a traditional Hoji here
